Kevin Brandes: The Pastoral Beauty of Italy’s Tuscany Hills

World traveler Kevin Brandes has visited many places over the years, from bustling cities to remote backwoods and tundras. One of Kevin Brandes’s favorite experiences was visiting the rustic Italian countryside, and one of the most famous of these regions is the Tuscany Hills area.

Against a landscape of gently rolling hills, the city of Florence is a must-see Tuscan destination. The medieval city is one of the birthplaces of the Renaissance and remains a testament to the inspired beauty of that period’s art and architecture. Although crowded, Florence is an excellent starting point for a Tuscan vacation, with many museums and historic buildings to visit, including the palace of the famous Medici family.

As for smaller locales, the medieval walled town of San Gimignano is known as “The City of Beautiful Towers” for its well-preserved and picturesque architecture. The hill town of Volterra is nearby and offers a less-traveled, authentic Tuscan countryside experience.

Nestled in central Tuscany is the spa town of Montecatini Terme, built near the old town of Montecatini Alto, which is easily accessible by a historic railroad. This picturesque and relaxing town is peppered with long-standing spas that combine centuries of tradition with modern techniques and equipment for an experience not to be missed. Its quiet pace and central location make it an ideal base for exploring the countryside.
